Job Description
About Aurora Solar
Aurora is on a mission to create a future of solar for all. Our award-winning software puts the power of data and technology into the hands of every solar professional to make solar adoption simple and predictable. Our software has designed millions of solar projects so far, empowering solar companies to sell, design, and install residential and commercial solar arrays accurately, seamlessly, and at scale.
We are a remote-first collaborative team of sustainable energy enthusiasts who love what we do. We’ve been named one of “The Best Mid-Sized Remote Companies To Work for in 2024” by BuiltIn.com and have been recognized for the second time as a Certified Green Business (CGB) with the city of San Francisco. We’re in this together to support the world’s transition to solar.
About the Team
Aurora’s design team is composed of a mix of fields, including content strategy, product design, and UX research — all inspired to solve complex systems-level problems for residential and commercial solar. Our team embodies a strong collaborative ethos as we partner with engineering and product peers from discovery to delivery. We value a customer-first mentality, iterative exploration, and peer design critiques to elevate the quality of our work while supporting strategic business priorities.
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to drive product design on one of the teams for Aurora’s HelioScope product. HelioScope is a cloud-based design and engineering platform which lowers the cost and increases the accuracy of commercial, industrial, and utility-scale solar projects. HelioScope powers our customers through the design and engineering process for tens of thousands of large-scale solar projects around the world every month. Think Costco with thousands of panels across millions of square feet of their rooftops, or a large solar array in the desert, with all the complexities therein, with massive project management as well — IA & navigation, data visualization, nested workflows, custom reports and proposals, searchable files, partner integrations, user permissions management, and much more. We need an experienced systems thinker with a dedication to rapid, iterative, executional UX/UI craft who enjoys pairing with product management, engineering, and other designers to define intuitive, innovative experiences for commercial solar.
Your Impact
-
Own and drive the design vision for your product area on HelioScope, informed by our design system and relevant product and engineering feedback
-
Partner closely with cross-functional teams in ways that develop trust and collaborative decision-making, resulting in feasible and elegant solutions that empower our users
-
Drive product design process from problem framing to solution exploration, with low-fidelity concepts, wireframes, and polished Figma prototypes, all the way to well-executed, high-quality working software. We strongly believe in Design QA and post-ship feedback loops.
-
Flexing process when needed to be lean and/or scrappy, to drive urgent business results that also keep up with deployment velocity
-
Inform and guide the work of engineering peers by providing clear, detailed, actionable, and organized deliverables
-
Possess deep knowledge of the user journeys and jobs to be done, within your product area and relevant peripheral areas, and represent both implicit & explicit needs of our users to the rest of the product team
What You Bring
-
5+ years of product design experience, shipping responsive web-based applications
-
Figma proficiency
-
Portfolio that showcases a comprehensive, systems-thinking approach to complex problems
-
Dedication to quality while having the ability to think deeply and iterate rapidly
-
Knowledge of building out complex, multi-persona, consumer-grade B2B products
-
Confidence to conduct user research activities, with some support from a research team; knowledge of how to synthesize, share findings, and apply them to design choices.
-
Willingness to go deep into the product’s technical abilities to understand the constraints, on par with engineering leaders and technical peers, to help translate that into intuitive, simple designs that can be built with efficiency, while solving usability issues
-
Experience building reusable components that are scalable and adaptable across various platforms and products. Recognizing when a user flow requires new components vs. adapting existing ones
-
Effective communicator, storyteller, and facilitator who can deftly address pushback with evidence and expertise, while building relationships and elevating design process maturity, overall — all while contributing to team camaraderie, too!
Nice to Haves
-
Experience designing for “builder” or “canvas” application experiences like 3D tools drawing/design tools or gaming platforms, for example, AutoCAD, and/or related technical applications like GIS, city planning, etc.
-
Data visualization experience with complex numerical datasets
-
Experience with product-led growth (PLG) experimentation methods for self-service subscription applications
-
Experience leading design for large-scale migrations—from older to newer technology stacks
-
Understanding of front-end development (HTML, CSS, React, etc.) to effectively communicate design specs and collaborate on component implementation
